Protein arginine deiminase (PAD) expression in macrophages polarized to proinflammatory (M1) and anti-inflammatory (M2) phenotypes. PAD1, PAD2 and PAD4 expression was upregulated in M1 macrophages, while PAD2 was strongly downregulated in M2 macrophages. mRNA expression of PAD1, PAD2 and PAD4 in THP-1 macrophages treated with LPS (M1 phenotype) or IL-4 (M2 phenotype) for 48 h. mRNA expression of PAD3 was not present in THP-1 macrophages.
